Cold War World

Description

I don't remember the particulars of this map; I made it a while ago. But I remember the basic gist of it:

The Germans managed to pacify the British (not conquer, mind you) during the Second World War, leaving the Soviets and Americans to face Hitler alone. Lucky for them Hitler ended up being assassinated by some crazy Frenchman, and there was just enough disarray for the Soviets to overwhelm the German defenses and push into Berlin. The Americans faced a tougher time with the Japanese; without the German scientists "captured" from the European campaign, development of the atom bomb was greatly slowed. The war pushed on until 1947, when a joint Soviet-American invasion of Honshu ended with Tokyo in ruins, and a surrender from the Japanese.

As per the peace treaties agreed to, the USSR controlled reconstruction in Europe, while America controlled reconstruction in the Pacific and North Africa. Communist governments were established all over Eastern Europe, and eventually they joined the Soviet Union, one state at a time. Japan was divided into two states; Communist North Japan and Capitalist South Japan.

This map is set in 2010, and the Cold War is still running strong. There was a brief World War III when China and the USSR went to war in 1977 (they are often considered allies, but they practice very different forms of Communism and the Chinese call the Soviets the "Revisionist Traitors to the North"). There was no nuclear exchange, as nuclear weapons are still relatively primitive, and American involvement was brief.

Soviet-backed coups and American-backed counter-coups have lead to several proxy wars, although much of the world has fallen to Communism anyways. Things heated up when South Africa successfully detonated its first nuclear weapon in 1985, and since then it has been a key player in keeping Communism out of Africa (although it has also used its new power to bully its neighbors and enemies and expand its territory). Things also got a little to close to home when a Communist revolution succeeded in Mexico back in 1997. The Americans wasted no time in backing a non-Communist North Mexico, but eventually it joined the US because the threat from Communist Mexico was too great (an invasion of the United States by a Communist country would likely spark a nuclear war, and Communist Mexico wouldn't stand a chance of winning anyways).

Things have stabilized now, and talks are underway to stop the fast-growing nuclear arms race. Another issue is global warming, which has taken a greater toll on the planet than in our time line, due to the massive amounts of industry produced by the Cold War mentality.

Here's a list of major powers:

COMMUNIST:
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
The People's Republic of China
Union of Latin American States
The People's Republic of France
Union of Indian Socialist Republics

CAPITALIST:
United States of America
The United Kingdom
South Africa
Canada
Australia
